"Flexible working" is one of the main buzz phrases of the modern office. But for most employers it is exactly that: just a phrase with no idea how to implement it. Under the new Work and Families Act, thousands of working parents will benefit from more leave and pay following a birth.
A typical example would be new mothers receiving 9 months statutory maternity pay, while fathers will benefit from extended paternity leave. Meanwhile, rights to request flexible working arrangements will now include those who look after elderly and disabled people, as well as young children.
Irish company Multitime Systems, which has an office in Birmingham, is at the forefront of making this new system easier to manage. It provide web-based technology to organisations across the country allowing workers and their employers to manage their time more effectively.
Ciaran Rowsome, Managing Director of Multitime, a Birmingham Chamber member said:
"The burden of responsibility for administering both the new leave scheme and the flexible working benefit for carers, will be placed on employers, who will have to decide whether their staff are eligible or not and then monitor the outcome.
"We have designed web-based and easy to use programmes in our VisionTime Web System, which binds together both the employee and manager in electronic sessions that ensure everyone is kept us to date at all times. "From the outset, the details of each request from the employee for the right to work flexibly can be processed through the system.
"Their manager can then predict electronically the impact of the employees suggestion. The system will compare the employee's new or potential working hours with others in the group so as to ensure the number of staff does not fall below the critical level".
