According to a YouGov survey for BT Business, more than one third of workers in the UK would opt for flexible working options over a pay rise. Home working was a particularly sought after option with up to 37% of men and 34% of women being prepared to forego a portion of their next pay rise – if they could work from home. The percentages are highest amongst Londoners and younger staff. Up to 43% of the 18 to 30 age group will look for such flexibility. This news comes just when a DTI survey says that 70% of graduates i.e. tomorrow’s workforce will actively look for flexible working while nearly half of the graduates felt it was the most important benefit an employer could offer.
The YouGov survey was carried out amongst UK workers and employers.
In addition, the YouGov research shows that directors of smaller businesses feel that flexible working policies can be an effective part of the modern business make up. 65% of such directors cite staff motivation and 50% increased productivity as key reasons to adopt them – while almost 60% believe that smaller businesses are just as capable of working with flexible working options as are their larger counterparts.
