Volcanic Ash and Flexible Working
Increasingly issues are arising that are causing problems with people trying to do their work. Earlier in the year it was the weather and we now have a second recent and even bigger international issue caused by volcanic ash from Iceland.
It doesn't have to be like this.
So in 2010 - three elements can be now managed and combined to assist with the uncertainties thrown up by natural distasters and other on-going disruptions. They are : -
- Flexiblity of Working Time
- Flexiblity of Working Location
- Remote and Mobile accessiblity to work
Flexiblity of Working Time and Location
By applying Flexible Working Hours and/or Flexible Working Locations much of the outfall from these disruptions can be avoided. Then once these new arrangements are alligned to the specialist technology that FlexTime has created for the subject, a new working environment for the 21st century can be created.
Our technology makes the best use of the modern IT world that now exists including new mobile phone capablities and other innovations.
We believe that FlexTime's approach is now the answer to many such workplace challenges, as the ash cloud.
So the big questions these days are - do your employees....
a. always need to work at fixed times or
b. do they need to travel so much, or in some cases, at all?.
For example, at MultiTime in order to manage the employees working time and location, we offer an array of technology to allow people to announce where they are and what they are doing in real time, over mobile phones, PCs and laptops.
Remote and Mobile accessiblity to work
Meanwhile sophisticated web conferencing systems are supporting this instant world where audio, visuals and content are combined, making the location of where employees work become a less relevant concern.
Then there's the work content itself. Much of it can now be accessed from anywhere.
So, specifically on the workplace mobility aspect, now, Alistair McKinnon, Senior Product Manager, Virgin Media Business, says there’s a strong business case for IP Multimedia, despite the initial outlay.
"When you take into account the cost of running your own PABX (Private Automatic Branch eXchange) or IP PABX system, and compare that with IP Multimedia, you’ll find the latter is easily comparable if not cheaper. Moreover, the cost-savings from a managed network service could be felt across the organisation".
Using such technology in "Supporting flexible working initiatives, for example, can reduce staffing costs and widen your recruitment catchment area by supporting homeworking.
It can also help a changing business minimise the cost of relocating staff".
Elsewhere on this site, you will see how new thinking on these issues can be catered for.
